Women composers' recital

Women composers' recital

Inspired by the work of organisations like Mutual Mentorship for Musicians and the words of Shanta Nurullah at the latest This Is A Movement talk.

I curated a women composers’ recital at The City Academy Hackney in which I teach singing and lead senior choir. This is the first women composer celebration ever hosted in the school and it will include pieces by contemporary jazz artists (many included in the 2022 New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers by Berklee Press), classical composers from the 18th century and hip hop artists from the 2000s. Among them: Shunaji, Tomeka Reid, Little Simz and more…

I will perform a piece by contemporary vocalist-composer Sara Serpa together with the musicians: Liz Jones, Sophie Ali, Hannah Monkhouse, Meghan Marshall and Harriet Crawford.

The event will be held at the school at 16:30.

Known as RUN, Giacomo Bufarini is a London based Italian artist whose works can be seen adorning streets from China to Senegal. RUN is interested in street art as a language of communication. His recognisable style shows a level of detail and complexity rarely seen in street art today, evidenced through his vivid rendering of interlocking bodies in symbolic poses, pattern like, friezes in bright, arresting colours.

Simone Baron is a polyglot pianist, accordionist, improviser and composer whose work “ego-less, genre agnostic and without expectations” (JazzTimes) engages curiously and charismatically with a broad spectrum of experimental idioms. Educated at Oberlin and Tel Aviv University and joyfully de-educated at festivals and performances across Europe and the Americas, Simone has won grants, fellowships and residencies from Chamber Music America, South Arts, Maryland State Arts Council, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Hambidge Center, i-Park Foundation, Strathmore Foundation, ArtOMI, UMD, Avaloch Farm, the Banff Centre, and Spectrum Toronto.

Parasang 8

Parasang is a weekly night of live improvisation led by Iranian sound artist, Pouya Ehsaei (Ariwo / Entr'acte / Zabte Sote) and curated by himself and MANANA//Records founder, Harry Follett. Each show is a one-off collaboration exploring the diversity of the city's musical communities through electronic music.

For this week's show we welcome the following incredible musicians to join Pouya Ehsaei (modular/electronic) on stage:

Maurizio Ravalico
(Collocutor, Fiium Shaarrk, Dele Sosimi, ex Jamiroquai & JTQ)

Visionary percussionist Maurizio Ravalico has been in the scene for over three decades, during the course of which he has maintained a lively and constantly cross-pollinating interest in musical expressions as diverse as funk, rock, 20th century composition, Cuban and Brazilian music, free-form improvisation, contemporary jazz and the so-called “experimental music” of post-war and beyond.

Maurizio has just released his first solo percussion album, ‘Nobody’s Husband, Nobody’s Dad’ with the London-based label Funkiwala; in his own words “the most eloquent synthesis to date of my lifelong love affair with percussion music”.

Maddalena Ghezzi

Voice player and composer born in Milan (living in London) with a natural curiosity for exploring new sounds in her work. Maddalena is band leader of Wells Reflections, Fuwah and Stanza da Tre and is currently working on a solo album.

Idris Rahman
(London-based saxophonist, clarinettist, singer, bass-player, composer and producer).

He has co-led the band Soothsayers for nearly two decades and has co-written and co-produced their seven critically acclaimed albums. Idris has performed and recorded with a whole range of artists including Anoushka Shankar, Arun Ghosh, Julia Biel, Osibisa, Ayub Ogada, Childhood as well as with his sister Zoe Rahman, with whom he has toured and recorded extensively.

"Rahman is a revelation - a saxophonist of fascinating creative resource, capable of both raw power and involved delicacy" - The Wire

Past guests at Parasang include Ethiopian krar player Temesgen Zeleke, Afro-Cuban percussionists Hammadi Valdes and Oreste Noda, Moroccan lute player Boujemaa Bouboul, jazz pianist Sarah Tandy, trumpeter Kevin Davy, James Mollison from Ezra Collective, Tim Doyle (Maisha/Cykada), dancehall/reggae drummer Marley Drummond, bassist Andrew Mclean, Aleh Ferreira (Banda Black Rio), Marcos Santana (Timbalada), Grim Artist 'Trim' and electronic producer Henry Keen. .

We'll be playing some records from 7 and taking orders at the bar for pizza from La Cantina Sociale. Collaborations kick off around 8pm.

Finally, if you'd like free tickets to this event, please sign up to our newsletter by emailing 'newsletter' to info.parasang@gmail.com and we'll send you a discount code which can be used by you, plus any friends you bring along. Code only valid until midnight on Tuesday.
